As of course, God with his pity on all asked, “Why do you, who enkindle life, Not show thy mercy on humankind? Why not burst out in desolate tears In places where sun doesn’t shine?” And so fumed they, one by one, Their tales of horror and moments of fun. Water, her blueness, came forward, “I am, as considered, precious than all gold, Greater than all beverages, A quencher of thirst, a thing so old, And am drunk by lives of all ages. But in my anger, water boils of blood, And I attack and invade the earth, And deluge thy men, thy creatures, thy plants, I drown cities and towns whole.” Air and Wind rushed to take her place, “We blew on earth since its genesis, We flanked its places, its cities, its houses, We gave them voice, we gave them breath, Why, we even grew their plants. But, of late we may be its cessation, For we blew our anger into the lives of creation. We snuffed out their life from them, We intoxicate their produce, they and their clan.” Fire flushed his way to God, “For millennia now, I bolstered their lives, I cooked their food, I scared their assailant, I illumined their path, I warmed their hearts, Why I even boiled their water. But, I incinerate they along their food, And consume whatever on my path, I burnt more than just their wood, And behind me was none but otiose.” God analyzed they, and gave the verdict, “I pardon thee from all thy sins, For all wasn’t in thy hands. Those humans left the earth lopsided, They spoilt the land, they spoilt the air. It is they, who ought to be guilty here, Not you, of all benevolence.” ~Anirudh K Bharadwaj~ The Indian School Bahrain X-N (2007-08) Chose Not To Tread This Way I tread the way from home, Slowly, one brick after another. I see birds flying around Merrily chirping their lives away; I see the clear yet blue waters Of the pond in the garden- On them the whitest of all Vienna’s geese, In them the smallest of Austria’s fish. And that is all I can do- For I hear not what is spoken, And can speak not that to be heard; ‘Twas not I who chose my fate- ‘Twas nature’s absurd way of torture. And so do I not hear a chirp, Nor know the ways of a quack Or a bark, or what you call a voice; Yet I know they differ, Yet I know I hear not. And as I tread the path I take, Through the stately common walks, I know, behind me insults are flung, Laughs are laughed, and jokes sneered at. But have I the voice to repel them? Or have I the voice to equal them? And so do I say to myself, For I am the only one who talks to me, ‘Laugh to your heart’s elation, men, For you know not the pain of me; I chose not to tread this way- ‘Tis the result of nature’s fury. For you know not the pain of me- Unheard and unable to hear For a life, wasted; For it is spring’s first dawn, Neither can I hear it, Nor can I taunt back at nature.’ Messiah?- There was once a bountiful and joyous earth, But that was before our self proclaimed messiahs came. They flew into our idiot boxes, They sprang up in radio sets, And stood taller than eighteen wheel trucks, Blocking rush hour traffic. They pledged us six lane highways, But I guess they’re still stuck at two; They vowed us clean, green gardens, I think they meant scrap, waste and junkyards; They guaranteed us they would remove poverty, Albeit they still grow on our money; They assured us employment, But I believe jobs are only for kith and kin; They swore allegiance to literacy, While they were as literate as my dog. They thought they could convince us, Using such lame promises, To run a financial scam in the ruling house- But, sorry, we weren’t- seriously. Nocent Humanity- Our mater earth has lost her innocence, She lost it due to those she fostered, Due to the very men who trample her face; Yet she stays contented she wasn’t slayed. Are we men with hearts of love, Or do we have void in its place? Are we grateful to the skies above, Or did we become insane? Do we restitute the earth’s probity, Or have we slighted away what we owe her? The people have lost their senses for long They quibble for what they ought not to do; For they find sins on all they see, Yet commit diablerie themselves; Even if wiseacres they are, They ought not to flaunt their forte, For there are those benighted as well, And they mustn’t collate themselves with them, And find that they’re brass hats, For even they may have their own secret lapses And wouldn’t want theirs exposed and shown- To be shown off like the banners of odium. It’s not a person’s beaut that counts But it’s only that he be unsullied; But isn’t it that none are perfect; So what is true of what we say? We formulate our rules and edicts, And it is for us to observe them, And if we men cede the deed, Then why, in first place, did we make them? Riches are today’s ultimate goal Replacing the true requisite knowledge; Then for what were the ancients subsisting? Was it to blabber whatever they wanted to Or was it to just say all nonsense they knew, And leave it for us to abide by? Is it rancor’s turn to reign over? For missiles stack where once was a forest; Where four feet fences were, Now stand blockades, barriers of walls- Why, I wonder if I have a neighbour at all. An eye for an eye maketh the world blind; But now who devels only the eye? Prison is with barking dogs there- When here it may be an aghast strangling. A praiser in front could ruin you from behind, A rival in front could hail you privily- Man is so fickle, after all. Few there die of rotundity, And few there of want, Few die of others killing them, And more after killing others, Few of watching kindred die, And few die of apathy. When demise sweeps ones affluent, The world turns around to see- Heaps of solace pave roads for miles; Albeit, when it is a penniless death, Not even kindred stay disquietened, They say- for riches, not pity, rules the world. He finds not his amour by virtue of brains, For now, beauty has gone wit deep. Where once was a dream of opulence Now lay wildernesses of incoherent slips; Where once fell a raylet of hope Now fall legions of weapons. In the guise of aid, They plunder the fortunes Of ones misfortunate; In the name of democracy, They decimate ages of toil and work. In the hands of one man Lay the offing of multitudes others, And in the hands of the many Lay the future of the one sovereign; So, finally, after much needed thought They end up querying The legitimacy of what they framed. Amity is a word only of the books, For antagonism long took its place; Consonance is thought to have arisen from trash, And solitude is to be the ultimate peace. But we do not understand the world, We know nothing in fact, nothing at all. What do we know of what we owe, And what about ideal life et cetera… Ode to a Fallen Sovereign- Clad in the finest of silks, A crown glistening atop his head- Awaiting his say, of a feeble voice, Standing tall beside the bay, Stay a once colossal army of dreams; Standing proud in the windswept plains, Cherishing memories that will never repeat- Of wives, children- Of kith and kin, Of times of benevolence of their glorious city- Of walking in its dazzling streets, With heads held high that’ll ne’er do so. Guarding a city, that’ll ne’er rise again. Standing in the midst of Zeus and Hera, The zealous sovereign had lost his zeal, For as the boorish infidels raze the walls, Plundering the famed treasures concealed, Life is but a dream afar And joy, a dream farther. As the city was torn apart, At glory’s glorious zenith, It’s sovereign kneeling at the foot of God- A score pried open the holy gates, And reaching the king, one stab enough, The sovereign fell, and stab after stab- As he lay dying, his lips could be read, His feeble voice fading away, ‘Take all the wealth wanted by thee, But wealth counts not in gold or silver, Once, not far from now, not near today, Repentance shall be thy worst curse…’ Ode to The Water of The Seas- The blue depths always had, Although not visually seen, A glamorous appeal to none but a few- Who knew that she could Be calm as well. Once she throws her snare, It is not but hard to ignore her call; To walk on such fine a sand That even an old man, frail and senile May once again relive those joyous days When he could fly over the earth, As free as a fickle child long dead. Even feathers turn and glide away- Flushed with a shame they never knew. As step after step turns feet into miles, Those miles, unnoticeably covered, Would ache to turn into millions more. The monotonous sounds of urban life, Would, if chance permits, Fall in surrender to her- the victor Of a competition unfair. Repetitive- true, but a sound Repetitive in ways that repetition, Surely monotonous, would evolve- Turn into a symphony; Composed to challenge- Challenge all claims that humans Hold the sceptre of music. Conserved for millennia, her music Yet untouched and original. Although great, an apex in mastery- Applause, deserved, is not involved. Praise, now, does not come To those who truly master all, Because only few call hers music. Water- clear, drunken by all, Is nothing short of a great masseuse; To dip feet into her, slowly with reluctance, And wait, not long, for her shivering chill- Is in itself a joy, unattainable otherwise. And when the waves lash the shore, And water riddles across feet- Ah! Such relief may never be felt; Easing daily aches and pains, Sorrows, tensions, whatever not. And when it goes back To whence it came from, Pulling the sand beneath our soles, ‘tis a tickle that even feathers die for. And die for, they will- For the sea is the mistress of all gaiety. Alas, but it is sad, That time does not stop for any tide, That there comes a point When we depart; Albeit huge, her existence is till land’s end- Which, I can only hope, is far away. Sonnet to Friendship- A good friend is like a flower- Hardly, if ever, noticed in bloom, Whose loss aches each crevice Of the heart, once gone, Leaving his lingering fragrance behind. When together, in joyous times, He multiplies twicefold our smile- Like a faithful mirror; But when one is bereft of friends- Not differing from a withered stem Albeit fine and sturdy, lacking leaves- And loneliness and sadness take over, There is no end to which loss cannot reach, And ache till death separates them fully. ~Anirudh K Bharadwaj~ The Indian School Bahrain X-N (2007-08) http://e-schoolscience.com/cognition/trackback.php?id=20071121014859498 My Friend http://e-schoolscience.com/cognition/article.php?story=20070809111739387 http://e-schoolscience.com/cognition/article.php?story=20070809111739387 Thu, 09 Aug 2007 11:17:00 -0500 http://e-schoolscience.com/cognition/article.php?story=20070809111739387#comments Poems Why do these people have to be Symbols of cruelty Once I gave them love and affection Now they pay back with pain equal to crucifixion What have I done for the pain I bare? I thought them friends But alas They changed their friends with changing trends From that time on, like the tree of life Alone in a desert was I Lost in the labyrinth of my life My heart and soul were dry Then as if from heaven, sent by God Came a pure white soul As though the angel of the lord Had come to guard my soul Wherever I went my mind remained On the angel sent my God But one question deep down remained Was this love in its truest form, or just another fraud? As the days went by, my heart felt light Like the deepest, darkest night Now, sleep did come during the nights And made the days more bright It was like the silver of the monsoon cloud The amber that turned gold But yet my head and heart were bowed With fear that the past may unfold The closer we got, the more I fought The urge to stay away But the distance cowered and we were showered With so much love, how much I could never say. At the end of a year so full of colour Came the time for “good bye” And I was left a wilting flower With no one nearby http://e-schoolscience.com/cognition/trackback.php?id=20070809111739387 Welcome to Cognition http://e-schoolscience.com/cognition/article.php?story=welcome http://e-schoolscience.com/cognition/article.php?story=welcome Tue, 07 Aug 2007 15:13:00 -0500 http://e-schoolscience.com/cognition/article.php?story=welcome#comments General Dear Friends, Cognition is everything about knowing. Express, enjoy and empower! Dr. Subhash B. Nair Cognition (from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) is a diffuse term and is used in radically different ways by different disciplines. In psychology, it refers to an information processing view of an individual's psychological functions. Wider interpretations of the meaning of cognition link it to the development of concepts; individual minds, groups, organizations, and even larger coalitions of entities can be modelled as societies which cooperate to form concepts. The autonomous elements of each 'society' would have the opportunity to demonstrate emergent behavior in the face of some crisis or opportunity. Cognition can also be interpreted as "understanding and trying to make sense of the world". In the following context, different new perspectives are employed. The term cognition (Latin: cognoscere, "to know") is used in several loosely related ways to refer to a faculty for the human-like processing of information, applying knowledge and changing preferences. Cognition or cognitive processes can be natural and artificial, conscious and not conscious; therefore, they are analyzed from different perspectives and in different contexts, in anesthesia, neurology, psychology, philosophy, systemics and computer science. The concept of cognition is closely related to such abstract concepts as mind, reasoning, perception, intelligence, learning, and many others that describe numerous capabilities of the human mind and expected properties of artificial or synthetic intelligence. Cognition is an abstract property of advanced living organisms; therefore, it is studied as a direct property of a brain or of an abstract mind on subsymbolic and symbolic levels. In psychology and in artificial intelligence, it is used to refer to the mental functions, mental processes and states of intelligent entities (humans, human organizations, highly autonomous robots), with a particular focus toward the study of such mental processes as comprehension, inferencing, decision-making, planning and learning (see also cognitive science and cognitivism). Recently, advanced cognitive researchers have been especially focused on the capacities of abstraction, generalization, concretization/specialization and meta-reasoning which descriptions involve such concepts as beliefs, knowledge, desires, preferences and intentions of intelligent individuals/objects/agents/systems. The term "cognition" is also used in a wider sense to mean the act of knowing or knowledge, and may be interpreted in a social or cultural sense to describe the emergent development of knowledge and concepts within a group that culminates in both thought and action. Cognition in mainstream psychology The sort of mental processes described as cognitive or cognitive processes are largely influenced by research which has successfully used this paradigm in the past. Consequently, this description tends to apply to processes such as memory, attention, perception, action, problem solving and mental imagery. Traditionally, emotion was not thought of as a cognitive process. This division is now regarded as largely artificial, and much research is currently being undertaken to examine the cognitive psychology of emotion; research also includes one's awareness of strategies and methods of cognition, known as metacognition. Empirical research into cognition is usually scientific and quantitative, or involves creating models to describe or explain certain behaviors. While few people would deny that cognitive processes are the responsibility of the brain, a cognitive theory will not necessarily make any reference to the brain or any other biological process (compare neurocognitive). It may purely describe behaviour in terms of information flow or function. Relatively recent fields of study such as cognitive science and neuropsychology aim to bridge this gap, using cognitive paradigms to understand how the brain implements these information-processing functions (see also cognitive neuroscience), or how pure information-processing systems (e.g., computers) can simulate cognition (see also artificial intelligence). The branch of psychology that studies brain injury to infer normal cognitive function is called cognitive neuropsychology. The links of cognition to evolutionary demands are studied through the investigation of animal cognition. And conversely, evolutionary-based perspectives can inform hypotheses about cognitive functional systems evolutionary psychology. The theoretical school of thought derived from the cognitive approach is often called cognitivism. The phenomenal success of the cognitive approach can be seen by its current dominance as the core model in contemporary psychology (usurping behaviorism in the late 1950s). Influence and influences This success has led to its application within a wide range of areas: • Psychology (particularly cognitive psychology), cognitive science and psychophysics • Cognitive neuroscience, neurology and neuropsychology • Behavioral economics and Behavioral finance • Artificial intelligence and cybernetics • Ergonomics and user interface design • Philosophy of mind • Linguistics, especially psycholinguistics and cognitive linguistics • Economics, especially experimental economics • Learning styles and Learning In its widest sense, the field is quite eclectic and draws from a number of areas, such as: • Computer science and information theory, where attempts at artificial intelligence, collective intelligence and robotics focus on mimicking living beings' capacities for cognition, or applying the experience gathered in one place by one being to actions by another being elsewhere. • Philosophy, epistemology and ontology • Moral philosophy, where it deals with the problem of ignorance, often seen as the opposite of cognition. • Biology and neuroscience • Mathematics and probability • Physics, where observer effects are studied in depth mathematically. Cognitive ontology On an individual being level, these questions are studied by the separate fields above, but are also more integrated into cognitive ontology of various kinds. This challenges the older linguistically dependent views of ontology, wherein one could debate being, perceiving, and doing, with no cognizance of innate human limits, varying human lifeways, and loyalties that may let a being "know" something (see qualia) that for others remains very much in doubt. On the level of an individual mind, an emergent behavior might be the formation of a new concept, 'bubbling up' from below the conscious level of the mind. A simple way of stating this is that beings preserve their own attention and are at every level concerned with avoiding interruption and distraction. Such cognitive specialization can be observed in particular in language, with adults markedly less able to hear or say distinctions made in languages to which they were not exposed in youth. Cognition as compression By the 1980s, researchers in the Engineering departments of the University of Leeds, UK hypothesized that 'Cognition is a form of compression', i.e., cognition was an economic, not just a philosophical or a psychological, process; in other words, skill in the process of cognition confers a competitive advantage. An implication of this view is that choices about what to cognize are being made at all levels from the neurological expression up to species-wide priority setting; in other words, the compression process is a form of optimization. This is a force for self-organizing behavior; thus we have the opportunity to see samples of emergent behavior at each successive level, from individual, to groups of individuals, to formal organizations, to KJ. Cognition as and in a social process In multiple observations, some dating back to antiquity, language acquisition in human children fails to emerge unless the children are exposed to language. Thus, 'language acquisition' is an example of an 'emergent behavior', which in fact requires a narrow, yet evolutionarily reliably occurring, set of inputs. In this case, the individual is made up of a set of mechanisms 'expecting' such input from the social world. In education, for instance, which has the explicit task in society of developing child cognition, choices are made regarding the environment and permitted action that lead to a formed experience. In social cognition, face perception in human babies emerges by the age of two months. This is in turn affected by the risk or cost of providing these, for instance, those associated with a playground or swimming pool or field trip. On the other hand, the macro-choices made by the teachers are extremely influential on the micro-choices made by children. In a large systemic perspective, cognition is considered closely related to the social and human organization functioning and constrains. Managerial decision making processes can be erroneous in politics, economy and industry for the reason of different reciprocally dependent socio-cognitive factors. This domain became the field of interest of emergent socio-cognitive engineering http://e-schoolscience.com/cognition/trackback.php?id=welcome
